I’m so glad I’m boring

Interesting people are really cool aren’t they. They’re always fun to be around. They’re the life of the party. We love to hang onto their every word, and to follow their crazy adventures. We read about them in novels and we watch them in movies and on television. Clearly being interesting must be the best thing ever. I’m sure everybody would love to be interesting.

Except me.

What did I say? Did you hear me right? How could I possibly not want to be interesting?

It’s pretty simple really. While interesting people might be fun to hang around, and I can’t think what the experience of reading a book or watching a movie might be without them, I have to say that that’s as close as I need to get to them. Because, to be honest, most of the time those interesting people in books and movies, or on TV, whether in fictionalised stories or real life, don’t seem to be having so much fun to me.

We all know that stories are about drama. We wouldn’t read books or watch movies if there was no drama. And let’s face it, the reason most real-life events make it to the news is because of their dramatic potential. Drama is it. We all love drama. Without it, life is…life is…a whole lot easier.

I’m quite happy not having drama in my life. I’m quite happy getting through my day without any trauma, or coming to blows with others or suffering any kind of terrible personal angst. Who needs it? It’s far more trouble than it’s worth.

For me, I crave the simple life. I enjoy simple pleasures. A quiet walk with someone I care about. A hearty meal. A nice relaxing evening. That’s the kind of life for me.

I know it sounds…it sounds…it sounds kind of boring. Nobody would ever turn that into a story. Nobody would ever want to watch that on TV. From my point of view, that’s good. I don’t need to be out there. I don’t need to be fodder for other people’s entertainment. I just want to be me.

So there you have it. It might be a cardinal sin in the celebrity obsessed age but I want none of that. I have no desire to be interesting. I’m happy being boring.

And if I need to spice up my life, there are always plenty of interesting people to read about or watch.

I think there’s a difference between healthy-interesting and unhealthy-interesting. Constant drama, as described in your post, is probably pretty unhealthy, from a mental health standpoint.

But you can be healthy-interesting without drama. Do something unique. Go on a trip to somewhere random and off the beaten path. Learn a new skill that most people don’t even consider – and you can even do this from the comfort of your own home. 🙂

Hi E.D.

How about if I try to be uniquely boring?

Uniquely boring sounds fun, yet drama-free. Go for it.
