I’m a twentieth century guy

Sometimes I find it difficult to believe that we’re already 15 years into the twenty-first century. How did we get here? Where did all the time go? Why is time moving so fast?

Quite often, I feel like this century definitely isn’t for me, and I was much more comfortable in the last century. I definitely feel like a twentieth century guy.

Conflict – it’s not just about the fight

One of the greatest truisms you’ll always hear thrown around is that good writing revolves around conflict. The basic principle is that without conflict there can be no drama, and without drama there’s no story.

I’m not going to dispute it. I’m not going to disagree with it in any way. At its most fundamental level, I suspect it’s true. But it does leave me with a bit of a problem.

I hate conflict.

I want people to like me

There are heaps of reasons why people choose to be writers.

Some people have a story bursting out of them, and they won’t be satisfied until they’ve got it out on the page. Some people feel like they have something to say, and nothing is going to stop them from saying it.

Top 10 things about my stories

Well, after having guests for a couple of weeks, it’s time to step back and take over my blog again. Which, as always, leads to the fun question of what on earth am I supposed to talk about?

The last time I posted here, I did something about top tens – basically how I wasn’t actually able to think about a decent top ten of anything. Luckily, over the last few weeks, I’ve been able to put a bit more thought into it, and I realised that I did have a really good idea for a top ten I could post.

How my story stands out from the rest – guest post from Kelly Hall

It’s always a pleasure to have visitors here at my site. Today I’m delighted to introduce fellow Booktrope author Kelly Hall who will be talking about her Light Keeper novels. So take it away, Kelly.

How my story stands out from the rest.

The Secret of Strange Waters- Blue Title RGBWhen I set out to write the Light Keeper novels I wanted to create something different. I think that is what most authors want is to find a fresh spin on a subject or to create something totally new. At the time, I had just decided to try my hand at writing and I was reading lots of vampire books. They seemed to be everywhere and so popular and every idea I had seemed to have been done in one way or another. I wanted to write something that was paranormal because I love paranormal books. I also knew that I wanted to create my own characters that were gifted and had a special lineage and powers. It has always fascinated me how some people claim to have abilities and I believe some actually do. I considered the idea of this community of specially gifted people who were all blessed with these gifts naturally by God, but then something happened that degenerated their gifts leaving what we see today, where some people have clairvoyant or psychic ability that they can’t understand or explain; and also the idea of how some of them tend to keep their abilities secret and cope with it throughout their lives. They go about their day to day as if it isn’t what they are. I always thought that was interesting and decided to base my story around that idea, and that is how I created Light Keepers, which I hope stands out as something unique.
